An unsuspecting banker named Fred Hopkins comes into contact with the meteor and it gives him superhuman powers. He becomes a costumed crime fighter that goes by the name of the Smithville Thunderbolt. Meanwhile, in present day Manhattan at the offices of the Daily Bugle, Peter Parker is trying to sell some Spider-Man pictures to Joe "Robbie" Robertson, but Robbie isn't interested. Instead, he sends Peter off to Smithville to see if he can snap some pictures of the mysterious local superhero. Pete no longer arrives on the scene than he's witness to a burning building and children being saved by the local guy. Pete changes into his Spidey costume and decides to help out, but he's attacked by another mysterious character with super strength who is apparently after the Smithville Thunderbolt. Peter throws a Spider tracer onto the Smithville Thunderbolt so he can pick up his trail later, and he changes back to his civilian clothes. A local busy body reporter named Roxanne De Winter stumbles onto Peter and gives him the business about trying to move in on her story, but as soon as she finds out he's from the Bugle in New York City, she takes him to lunch and tries to team up with him in hopes of being discovered. Petere isn't interested, and politely excuses himself. It's not long before he changes back to his costume, hot on the trail of his Spider tracer and the Smithville Thunderbolt. at a small house in the 'burbs. Spider-Man finds an older man, and quickly discovers the costume of the Smithville Thunderbolt in the closet. Fred Hopkins breaks down and tells Spider-Man his story of how his powers cam to be, and how they faded recently, so he was rigging "disasters" that he could be the hero of, because he couldn't let the hero part of his life die. As Spidey listens to the story from Fred, who is by this time in his costume, Spidey's spider sense starts tingling, and he hears a board creek. He shoot webbing at the door and yanks it open, only to find that Roxy, who followed him there, on the other side snapping a picture. But while wisecracking, he accidentally endangers the old couple who were being held. After saving the day he swings off with those thoughts in his head before deciding to do his laundry (the exciting life of a superhero, eh?) In the laundrette, three thugs try to rape (the word isn't mentioned but the intent is clear) the female attendant. Peter steps in and uses his powers as a type of kung-fu to do some arse-kicking and throws the thugs back onto the streets. He is declared a hero and the local community decide to start a 'Peter Parker Patrol' scheme where a group of residents will walk the streets to stop trouble bfore it happens. Joe isn't happy at the Bugle and buries the story but the unwanted attention leads to the thugs targeting Peter. His flat is stink-bombed, rats are put in his fridge and eventually it is trashed completely. After this final attack, Peter changes to Spidey and chases the thugs down and warns them off. Peter and MJ go up to see the state of Pete's flat. It is a total mess and the fire officer tells them it was a smoke bomb that did the damage. Pete's red and blue spidey costume is a bit of a mess ... although he does still have the black costume that the Black Cat made for him (very cool). Pete is agonising over what he should do but is slightly puzzled when MJ suggests he should have the perpetrators arrested. He admits he has only ever fought back against criminals and not thought about using the police as a first resort. Shortly afterwards, Pete takes a phone call at home. It is the editor of the Times - the Bugle's main rival. In a really funny exchange, he offers Pete a front page editorial as 'crime buster of the month'. He just has to pose for photos. Despite not being interested in the prestige, or posing with a model, the offer of $1000 eventually swings it for him. Meanwhile, JJJ is furious ... with Robbie for not using the vigilante story about Pete properly (read issue 11). Robbie admits he let personal reasons affect his judgment. Next up, Peter does get the gang arrested and ID's them at a parade. Then, back at home, he is cornered by his landlady, Mrs Muggins, who wants rent. Pete loses it and gives her all of his $1000, before instantly regretting it. Back at the Bugle, Pete gets a hero's welcome. Jameson even congratulates him as a vigilante and says he's always thought of him as a son! This is the best dialogue in the whole two-parter. JJJ endorsing crime-fighters - priceless stuff. Pete has some thoughts about giving up Spidey and being a hero as himself but gets a phone call from gang (out on bail) who threaten him. This time he really loses it and goes swinging as Spidey to teach them a proper lesson. Meanwhile, one of the gang member's brothers is a hitman. He says he'll kill Peter and goes to stake out Pete's place with a sniper's rifle. He can't get a clear shot however and after Pete leaves, he decides to go wait in his flat. MJ is on her way to meet Pete however and walks into the flat just as the gunman is ready to shoot. As expected though, Spidey shows up just in time (the gang have had second thoughts and filled him in on what's happening). He webs up the gun and the rest of the gang burst in to try and talk the gunman out of any more violence. Next up, the police storm in too. They arrest the gunman. Spidey has left by now and Peter re-enters the flat as himself. There's a great line where MJ (who knows PP=SM) tells him what's happened in front of the police: "you know how dangerous Spider-Man is!" Pete sticks up for the gang and says he won't press charges. Because of this the residents turn against him and disband the Peter Parker Patrol. Pete's not sure if he's done the right thing to let the crooks go ...he just wants a normal life.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1064/5512/files/marvel-comics-web-of-spider-man-12-1195897604.jpg?v=1759441804
yshg-web-of-spider-man-13
Web of Spider-Man #13

Grade: VF
Issue Number: 13
Release Date: N/A
Writer:
Artist:

Spider-Man is swinging through NYC as newspaper clippings tell us a story of how he apparently induced a vehicle to run over a man at a crossing. It's fairly clear from the images that the guy was just 'spooked' by Spidey's appearance and had rushed front of an oncoming van. The webbed one had then tried to stop it hitting him by using his webline. As Spidey attends to the man, many in the assembled crowd turn on him. The rest of the crowd see the incident for what it was though, insisting our hero had tried to save him. Spider-Man gets angry with the bickering and shouts for someone to call an ambulance. A freelancer has taken photos of all this and hawks them to JJJ at the Bugle. Jonah is only interested in the ones putting Spidey in a bad light and persuades Robbie to run a front-page editorial: 'Spidey Goes Berserk!' As reporters besiege the hospital, Ben Urich senses something isn't quite right but JJJ storms in, saying he'll pay for the injured man's medical bills, etc. He puts words in the guy's mouth about what Spidey did and gets Pete to take some pics. Later, Spidey is involved in foiling a bank robbery. The robbers start shooting, though, and half the crowd turn on him after the event saying that if he'd just left things, no-one would have been endangered by the flying bullets. Back at his flat, Pete is mad and calls MJ to sound off. He's annoyed that he is constantly putting his life on the line but gets no credit for it. Back at the hospital and Ben has found out the truth. Our runaway is actually a wanted conman. He bolted when he saw Spider-Man because he thought he might be onto him. He hadn't been attacked at all, it was just his own guilt that made him dash across the road. Meanwhile, Spidey bursts through Jonah's window at the Bugle. He webs the office door closed (while the rest of the Bugle staff mass outside wondering what the noise was). He tells Jonah that he's saved him and his friends on many occasions and he doesn't get why he has to keep pushing him. Spidey loses it and launches himself across the room. JJJ is speechless and Spidey taunts him. As he winds up to punch him, Jonah says that the Bugle was only reflecting the public's opinion. Spidey counters that the Bugle has helped form the public opinion but Jonah says that the very fact Spidey is threatening him proves he was right all along. We cut away and Spidey has left. Robbie and some other staff enter JJJ's office and ask if he's OK. JJJ sends the rest away but tells Robbie to stay. Robbie tells him the truth about the guy in the hospital who Jonah is paying the medical bills for. Jonah tells him to run the story (clearing Spider-Man's role). Robbie said he was going to anyway and would have quit if Jonah had stopped him. Jonah says he knew that and wouldn't have accepted his resignation. On his own, in the wreck of his office, Jonah admits to himself that he could be wrong about Spider-Man's motives but also points out that Spidey could be wrong about him - he does have a heart. He has 360 degree vision in his costume so Spidey's attempts to sneak up on him don't work. Meanwhile, the Black Fox escapes. Chance also escapes when Spidey saves a resident. As Spidey goes home and tries to get some sleep, MJ pops round and Pete fills her in on his eviction problem. Meanwhile, the Black Fox is trying to hawk the jewel to another buyer. The buyer appears to double-cross him though by secretly phoning Chance (whose identity is some sort of businessman called Mr Powell) to tell him the Fox's whereabouts. While out swinging, Spidey comes across the tracer signal he placed on Fox and intercepts Chance attacking him. Spidey puts a beating on Chance and destroys his costume. The Fox has escaped though and this time has ditched Spider-Man's tracer. Pete does go to the buyer's office though and sell the notebook for $3000. Suddenly the mysterious Tombstone storms in (see issue 36 for his first appearance) and hurls Macendale out the window. Hobgoblin just survives by summoning his glider but instead of going to get his revenge on the Arranger, he decides to go after Spider-Man (hmmm…) Meanwhile, over at Pete and MJ's, the are throwing a party. Mrs Muggins storms in though and demands to know what's going on. She bawls Pete out as he owes her rent. Pete calls Harry to see where he is but he is stuck in traffic because of the Hobgoblin. Pete leaves the party to go after him … except that he's feeling a bit tipsy from alcohol! He hadn't been drinking himself but tackles Hobby while half cut. He makes numerous mistakes but Macendale is pretty pathetic anyway so still comes out on top. Back at the party and it turns out that Mr Muggins had spiked the punch. Mrs Muggins is furious but, as he and MJ are moving out soon, Pete gives her a goodbye kiss!
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1064/5512/files/marvel-comics-web-of-spider-man-38-1195897595.jpg?v=1759441677
5ta3-web-of-spider-man-39
Web of Spider-Man #39

Grade: VG
Issue Number: 39
Release Date: N/A
Writer:
Artist:

Nathan Lubensky has been robbed! And he's determined to go to any length to get back one of the stolen items - Aunt May's engagement ring! Wait'll you see what Spider-Man does once he finds out who committed the crime! Summary We start with an ominous scene of a knifeman standing over a woman vagrant. He's ready to do some damage when Spidey – who, care of ASM300, is back in the red and blue – jumps in. Spider-Man still has the 'Die Spinne' on his back as he got the suit in Europe during the vs Wolverine one-shot. As he's webbing up the crook, the bag lady starts pulling on a thread dangling from his costume and ends up pulling off half of the back section! Spidey swings off, telling he to call the police for the knife guy. Elsewhere and Nathan Lubensky (who has been out of the books since Web Of 24 but recently returned in ASM300) is missing May. He tells a tramp on the street that he doesn't know the time as his watch is at home and the tramp promptly goes and breaks in to steal it. In Pete and MJ's new apartment, Pete is trying to fix his costume without much luck. MJ calls one of her favourite designers and asks him to make Pete a costume for a fancy dress party. Pete then calls May and is told about a break-in at Nathan's. The tramp that broke into Nathan's also stole a diamond ring – his and May's engagement ring. Pete comes by to help him clean up and the next day, fresh with his new costume, he goes around to the pawn shops to see what people have been selling. Spidey eventually comes across the right shop … while the tramp is trying to pawn the ring. The tramp runs and escapes quicker than a regular person, leaving Spider-Man perplexed. We see the 'tramp' fishing a purple costume from a back alley… Between Pete and Nathan, they work out that the tramp is Norton Fester – The Meteorman (who was last seen in Spectacular 41). Pete ran into him near Aunt May's the previous evening and puts two and two together. He rushes off to May's. He battles Meteorman to submission and Nathan turns up. Nate retrieves his ring from Fester and tells May he still wants to marry her.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1064/5512/files/marvel-comics-web-of-spider-man-39-1195897594.jpg?v=1759441674
asom-web-of-spider-man-40
Web of Spider-Man #40

Grade: GOOD
Issue Number: 40
Release Date: N/A
Writer:
Artist:

Spider-Man knew that Betty Brant Leeds has been troubled ever since her husband died. But even the wall-crawler never suspected that Betty's quest for serenity would lead her into the arms of a religious cult! Summary Flash is rushing to the Bugle to tell Betty about his new job coaching kids in the police athletic league. This is a bit strange since the last time we saw Betty, she still had amnesia and thought Ned was alive! Anyway, Betty is talking to a guy who says they'll catch up later. Several weeks later and Spidey is swinging by Betty's when he decides to drop in as Pete to say 'hi'. Betty has moved however and an estate agent is there. Betty has instructed them to sell everything as is. The estate agent offers to get rid of a 'tacky lamp' (Pete's housewarming gift!) if it'll make the place look better. As Pete leaves, as Spidey, he swings across Flash beating a guy up. Flash tells Spidey that Betty went missing two weeks back and that this guy (the same one from the start) was the last person to be seen talking to her. Spidey helps the other guy up but pilfers one of his pamphlets, which he takes (as Pete) to Kate Cushing at the Bugle. Kate says it is from a religious cult called The Students Of Love. She tells the story of how her sister became involved in a cult when she was younger. Kate gets Ben Urich to try and track Betty down using the calling card the estate agent gave Pete at Betty's old flat. She then reports Betty as missing to the police. Meanwhile Flash is following the guy from the start again. He tracks him to an old ramshackle building but once he gets inside the cult members come after him with knives. As they corner him, Spidey swings in and cleans house. It turns out that Spidey put a tracer on the guy and followed him. The chap had led Flash deliberately into a trap and the building isn't their real HQ. Spidey continues to track the cult guy out to NJ by hitching on his van's roof. Summary Pete battles off the cult members and runs off with a struggling Betty over his shoulder. He is greeted by brothers Bruce with a homemade flame thrower. As he tries to avoid the flames, Betty pulls his mask off! Pete tries to conceal his face while battling in the smoke. Pete decides he has to run to hide his ID (and keep MJ safe) so escapes through an air vent. Ben Urich is on the trail meanwhile at the realtors' office but doesn't really get anywhere. Elsewhere and Spidey is crawling through the vents he watches a scene in a study where the man from the very start – Brother Guy – is talking to some sort of guru 'teacher'. He mentions Spider-Man and also says he is worried about Brother Bruce's arsonist tendencies. Teacher guy gets a call from the realtor – Sister Jane who tells him about Ben asking questions. Teacher tells Guy to get a group of Brothers together and warn off Ben. Elsewhere and one of MJ's friends is at their new apartment. MJ tells her she's going to stay over and wait so she can meet Peter. Pete, though, is still at the cult's HQ and has changed into one of the 'Brother' outfits he found. At the Bugle and Flash hooks up with Ben to carry on tracing Betty. At MJ and Pete's and he still hasn't come home the next morning. MJ's friend tells her about how good the pay is for lingerie shoots. Ben and Flash have gone to see a priest to see if he has any leads on the cult. The priest tells them how the Teacher does 'miracles'. As he describes the trick of how Teacher will cure a cancerous patient, with fake blood and so on, Pete is watching the trick back at the cult's HQ. The last words of the priest is that it all looks so real that if you see it, you can be hooked for life. But when Flash Thompson takes matters into his own hands by kidnaping her, whose side will the wall-crawler be on? Meanwhile, Mary Jane wouldn't really model for a revealing linerie catalogue ... would she? Summary Pete is angry at Flash and the reverend for taking Betty but the rev asks him if he's ever don anything wrong for the greater good (hmmm, good point – 'Well no… I mean, maybe assault and battery… and illegal entry', Pete thinks). The reverend is trying to deprogram Betty, while May pops into MJ's and Pete's. MJ is in the shower and Pete is at Flash's. May sees MJ's lingerie shoot pics! Teacher has told Brother Guy to search for Betty at the list of places she originally gave them about where she might stay. He also says to keep an eye on Bruce, who could have been pushed over the edge by the deprogrammers' raid. The cult launch an attack on Flash's flat. Pete gets the rev to safety but one of the cult members holds a knife to Flash's throat, preventing Pete from doing anything too rash. At the cult's HQ, Bruce has set a fire in the basement. In MJ's flat, May is shocked at the pictures when MJ says they're for a catalogue. She tells MJ if she hurts Pete then she'll have to dock (deck) her! MJ burns the pictures and negatives. She obviously didn't fancy a rumble with Aunt May. Back at the cult's HQ and Pete and Flash are tied up. Bruce wants to kill them and gets a gun from Teacher's office. Meanwhile, the flames begin to take hold. Kate and Ben have managed to track where the cult are with a bit of help from the reverend and one of Ben's sources and they set off to go there, after calling the police. Betty is much more herself after the reverend's deprogramming efforts. As the fire burns, Pete helps her and Flash escape. After a quick change to Spidey, he intercepts Bruce and then deals with Teacher, who also has a gun. Bruce and Teacher get trapped in the burning building. After forcing the plane to crash-land, the Vulture's picking off the survivors one at a time! Can Peter stop him without revealing his secret identity ... and without any web fluid? Summary Still in Vegas but making his way to the airport to fly home, Spidey realises that he's short of webbing and that his web-making equipment is back in New York. At the airport, he realises a larger-than-life character, 'Snake' is to be on the same plane as him. Out in the desert and the Vulture has glided into a cave. We get a flashback to Web of Spider-Man #24 in Atlantic City where the Vulture tried to sell his dodgy dice to Snake. Continuing on, the dice were a product of his and Randall Reece's research and were contained in journals that were later stolen from Vulture's hotel room. Vulture blames Snake and has vowed revenge. On the plane that Pete's on, Vulture interrupts its flight with a stick of dynamite to try and kill Snake. The plane plummets but Pete breaks open a cupboard with parachutes in and the passengers float to safety. Well, relatively speaking. The Vulture intercepts them and flies off with Snake. Snake's gang follow him while Pete tends to a stewardess who's been ko'd. The Vulture takes Snake back to his cave but Snake reveals the journals were blown up on the plane. Spidey then shows up. He struggles in battle with no webs and in the heat. Snake's gang shows up and gets him away. Vulture manages to inject Spidey with a 'mummification serum'. He is out cold but is woken up by a member of the police dept. She tells Spidey that they managed to 'coax' an antidote out of the Vulture for the serum. The stewardess Spidey helped was a plant as the CID have been after Snake and capturing Vulture was just a bonus. It is 11:15 pm and the Lobos strike where the Kingpin's men least expect it. They take their helicopter to the roof. It hovers above as some of their gunmen fire down at the roof guards. Both Lobo brothers, fangs bared and claws extended, leap down at the Kingpin's men. In seconds, they have landed hard on two men, and then pursued the others, dragging them down from behind and slashing their throats with sharp claws. Their henchmen climb down a rope ladder from the chopper, still firing their weapons. The Kingpin's men run for their lives, thoroughly routed. In his office, the Arranger gets a frantic message from one of the men on the roof, telling him that the enemy is already coming down the stairs. He beseeches the Arranger for reinforcements but then he is silenced forever. The Arranger can only mop the sweat off his brow and mutter, "Heavens!" Slashing and killing, los Hermanos de la Luna wade through the Kingpin's men and make their way down the stairs to the penthouse floor. The Arranger hears them coming and hurries to a secret elevator he has in his office. He is just descending when the door of his office is blown across the room, colliding with his desk. The Lobos have arrived. They look down through the transparent Plexiglas of the elevator but they are too late. The Arranger is gone. But that's acceptable to them. The man they really want is the Kingpin. In another office, the huge figure of the Kingpin sits placidly in the dark behind a desk. Suddenly, the office doors are ripped off their hinges as the Lobos burst in. They demand vengeance for the Kingpin's attempt to have them killed. "Nonsense" says the Kingpin without moving his mouth, denying such an attempt was made. "You call my brother a liar?" says one Lobo. "I call your brother a fool. Like you." says the unmoving Kingpin. This response so enrages the Lobos that they howl in anger and attack. On a roof eight blocks to the north, a very sick webhead maintains his balance by hanging onto a TV antenna and wonders why J. Jonah Jameson betrayed him. Here Spidey thought the two of them were fighting together against the mob and Jonah has to inject him with a "nearly lethal" experimental virus. The wall-crawler shoots out some webbing and swings to a nearby building but he is so sick he nearly doesn't make it. It has gotten so bad that Spidey feels like he's going to die. "But I can't die", he thinks as he pulls himself to another roof, "Got a book due at E.S.U. Library Monday morning." (Ah, that famous Spidey wit!) Not only that, he has to find out what's going on with the Lobos and the Kingpin. There are dozens of police cars at the entrance to Fisk Tower as a squadron of cops carefully enters the lobby of the building. They are led by Sergeant Frank Farrow (remember him?). Joy Mercado and Nick Katzenberg are along for the story. Farrow tells them to be careful as they walk through the war zone. Nick barely listens. He is too busy trying to coax Joy into sharing a cab with him afterwards. ("Katzenberg, I'd rather eat slime" she says.) Joy asks Frank if this attack is related to the killings that he and Ben Urich were investigating. "Gosh, I don't know", Frank says sarcastically, "Whadda you think?" Then he opens a door and shows them a room full of bodies. There is blood everywhere and the corpses have all been horribly slashed. Katzenberg, unfazed, asks Joy to pose with one of the bodies to add a "personal" touch to the news photo. Joy won't give the "scuzzbucket" the satisfaction. Outside, Spidey has made it to the Fisk building and is scaling the wall. He realizes that Hammerhead ambushed him specifically so that he wouldn't be around to interfere with the gang war. But he still can't figure out Jonah. Why didn't he want Spidey to interfere? By now, the cops and the reporters have made it to the Kingpin's office. Farrow warns that it could be messy inside. But Katzenberg is eating it up. "I got a sweet tooth for this stuff." he says. Nick can't wait to snap a photo of the Kingpin "ripped to bits like an old cat toy". He thinks the picture will be "better'n that shot of John Lennon in the Post". The group enters the dark office just as Spidey arrives at the window. They all look at the large figure behind the desk. Spidey thinks he is seeing the Kingpin dead. But it is soon clear to everyone that it is not the Kingpin who is torn open but a life-size dummy with a "remote speaker" so the Kingpin could talk to Los Hermanos from a distance. The frustrated Lobos have slashed it up and written, "Kingpin - You can run but you cannot hide" on the wall in blood. (But, obviously, not the Kingpin's blood.) Once Spidey takes this all in, he realizes that he is too weak to do anything more, so he heads home. As he leaves, Nick Katzenberg spots him outside the window. He snaps off a photo, knowing that Jameson will love it. In fact, he already imagines the headline: "Spider-Man Linked to Mob Massacre!" Spidey isn't worrying about any of that. He hitches a ride on the top of a truck and just hopes he can make it back to Aunt May's place. The way he feels now that "seems like a real long shot". By the time he makes it home, he is doing better than he was just a half-hour before. But he is so woozy, he almost misses his exit and his "brain feels as sharp as day-old oatmeal". Deciding that "Aunt May has too many boarders" to be able to sneak into the bedroom window unseen, he climbs into the window that leads to the basement. (Now, I don't want to make a big deal out of this but I could have sworn there was no one but May, Pete, MJ, and Kristy in the house just a couple of issues ago. Pete was climbing through the bedroom window all the time without any worries about being spotted. Do you think someone told Gerry about halfway through this story, "You know, Aunt May is running a boarding house and has all these people living with her?" and Gerry said, "oh yeah."?) Anyway, Spidey changes into his civvies down in the basement (even though there shouldn't be any clothes down there for him to change into) and staggers up the stairs to the living room. He is expecting all of the boarders to be asleep which will allow him to enter unobtrusively. Instead, he walks right into a crowded living room. Wheelchair-bound Nathan Lubensky and beret-wearing Arnold are looking right at him as he enters. Lamely, Peter starts to create an excuse for being in the basement but the boarders are too distraught to worry about his entrance. They tell him there's been a terrible accident. Peter asks where his Aunt is and they tell him she is at the hospital. Naturally, Pete assumes the accident involves May but before he can act he collapses on the floor. The virus has gotten the better of him. In bed, a feverish Peter has nightmares of the Lobo Brothers, Hammerhead, Nick Katzenberg, a red-eyed Kingpin, and a red-eyed Jonah Jameson. He wakes up yelling but seemingly over his illness. Mary Jane is standing by the bed and she tells him that he's been out of it for two days. (And someone put Pete to bed and took all his clothes off. It could have been the boarders but, since Pete had his Spidey suit underneath his clothes, you'd think one of them would have mentioned it. So, most likely it was Mary Jane except that she wasn't home when Pete passed out. What did the boarders do? Leave him lying there until his wife came home?) MJ is dressed in a green business outfit and she has changed her hair so that it is pinned up. ("I've been needing a new look," she says.) She hands Pete a mug of soup to fight the flu he has, courtesy of Aunt May. Hearing that May is all right makes Pete think he must have been delirious when he first came out of the basement. Then he looks down at the latest Daily Bugle and forgets all about that. The headline says, "Spider-Man Linked to Massacre" (Hey! I thought it was supposed to be "Spider-Man Linked to Mob Massacre!") with Katzenberg's photo of Spidey taking it on the lam. Pete mutters, "I'll kill him". He then explains to MJ that Jonah Jameson is not only smearing him, but tried to kill him. "I didn't just catch the flu, MJ" he says, "Jonah injected me with some kind of virus". He tells her that this attack almost landed him in the hospital and that mention reminds him that he thought Aunt May was in an accident. MJ tells him it isn't May in the hospital but Kristy. So, off they go to visit Kristy in the hospital. Kristy tells Pete that she shouldn't even be there. "I had an upset stomach, I threw up. I hit my head on the bathroom wall and I fainted. That's all" she says. Pete points out that she is "awfully thin" and Kristy replies, "I'm a blimp". Pete gives her a touch on her nose and promises to visit later. He and MJ go out into the hall where Pete notes that Kristy's arms are all black and blue. Susan Ransome, Kristy's Doctor, overhears Pete and explains that "unexplained bruises are a typical symptom of eating disorders". She continues, "They're caused by a chemical imbalance resulting from a combination of anorexia and bulimia". Pete and Susan stroll down the hall with MJ, arms folded across her chest, walking behind. Pete doesn't understand how Kristy can have anorexia when she eats all the time. Susan explains that Kristy is bulimic, meaning she binges on food and then purges by forcing herself to vomit. "But she's only thirteen years old!" Pete exclaims. Susan tells him she was eleven when she started binging and vomiting. "It took me fifteen years to get help," she says. "I could have died. So could she." She tells them they'll talk again tomorrow then heads off for a meeting. Pete turns to MJ and asks her what she thinks and all the rage and frustration comes spilling out. "I'm sick to death of everyone and their problems," she yells. Lorraine with her drugs, Kristy with bulimia, Aunt May and her heart, Peter and his hang-ups. No one seems to notice MJ's problems. "My career is skidding downhill, my life savings are tied up in court, I'm living in your Aunt's house and nobody cares!" she cries. She runs away down the street, telling Peter to leave her alone. Peter decides it might be best to let MJ go for now. But he needs someplace to direct his own anger. To his left is a newspaper dispensing machine. There is that Daily Bugle with that inflammatory headline. Just what Pete needs. Someplace to take out his aggressions. At the Bugle, Nick Katzenberg, reeking of garlic and onion from the pizza he ate for lunch, tells Joy Mercado she should have taken him up on the lunch offer. (Except, if we remember that Pete was delirious for forty-eight hours, that scene with Nick and Joy took place two days ago, not earlier in this day. Note the mistakes that have suddenly cropped up in this issue after Gerry flawlessly juggled multiples plotlines for months. Did he just tire of the storyline or was something else going on?) Joy tells Nick to "Eat lice and die" (the kinder-gentler comic book rejoinder). Nick tells Joy she is just jealous of his status with JJJ. He walks away, picking his teeth, leaving Joy sputtering in rage. Washing up in the bathroom, Nick congratulates himself for picking up this great gig. ("Sure beats duckin' punches from Sean Penn with the other paparazzi.") Now he's working on picking up a "good woman" to make his life complete. Unfortunately, that thought flies right out of his head when he looks up and sees an upside-down Spider-Man in the mirror right behind him. (The mirror's not behind him. Spider-Man is!) Nick makes a break for it but Spidey webs the door shut before he can get to it. The web-slinger has a point beyond just terrorizing Katzenberg. J. Jonah Jameson is not in his office and Spidey wants to know where the publisher is keeping himself. Nick must know, Spidey figures, since "you're the only one Jonah talks to anymore". In spite of his stammering and his frightened claims that "I-swear-it-wasn't-my-idea-it-was-Jameson", Nick doesn't go down easy. He doubles back and heads for the window. But the ol' web-slinger leaps over him and parks himself on the windowsill. At that, Nick concedes defeat. He tells Spidey that Jonah is home "at his penthouse". Before he can finish spilling his guts, Nick notices that the window is wide open. Spider-Man has left the building. At the Jameson penthouse, a man who looks an awful lot like the publisher sits at a desk with his back to the balcony gloating over the present circumstances. The Lobos have scared the Kingpin away, Hammerhead is ready to make his move, and Spidey will be blamed for everything because of the articles in the Daily Bugle. He sips some wine and looks at some Katzenberg photos as a shadow in the shape of Spidey's head passes over the top of his desk. Calmly, Jonah turns to see Spidey perched out on his balcony. He jovially invites the wall-crawler in. Spidey enters the office and faces off with Jameson. The first thing he notices is that his spider-sense is tingling again. The second thing he notices is that Jonah's voice suddenly gets "deeper with some kind of accent". The third thing he notices is that Jonah pulls out a futuristic-looking pistol and fires it at him. Spidey leaps over the shot (which strikes and shatters a bust of Julius Caesar) but he can't believe Jameson is actually trying to kill him. JJ tells him that the gun "fires a variety of explosive capsules". The one he has just fired contains "a fatal quantity of cyanide gas" which will not affect him because he is wearing nose filters. Through the smoke of the cyanide, Spidey sees Jonah running out of the office. The webhead stopped breathing the instant the Caesar bust exploded but he knows he can't hold his breath forever. He leaps through the doorway and tackles Jameson, as the wisps of cyanide trail along behind him. Holding JJJ down on the ground, Spidey asks him why he's turned bad. "Jonah Jameson is the same man he always was" is the reply. When Spidey disagrees, saying, "the JJJ I knew would never have sided with Hammerhead, never have tried to kill me", the man on the floor calls him a fool and tells him it was easy to deceive him. Jonah's face appears to melt and Spidey finally knows the truth. This man has never been J. Jonah Jameson. He is, of course, the Chameleon! The Chameleon decides that his masquerade as Jameson has lasted long enough. He fires his gun again, which gets the wall-crawler to leap away from him. The blast hits the ceiling and the rubble that falls down lands on top of the web-spinner. Now wearing his usual white mask, the Chameleon runs for a private elevator, vowing, "When next we meet, I'll wear a different face." Spidey clears the rubble away and tries to stop the elevator but doesn't make it in time. The elevator door closes in his face. No problem, though. He can crawl down the outside wall and meet the Chameleon at the street. But then Spidey hears a moan inside a closet. At first he's afraid that it is "another Chameleon booby-trap" but his spider-sense isn't triggered so he opens the closet door. (Except it magically turns into the bedroom door, even though Spidey clearly said "closet door" three panels before.) And the webhead is chagrined to discover that he is rescuing his old nemesis, the real J. Jonah Jameson. Jonah is sitting cross-legged on the floor next to his bed. He is bound in a straightjacket with adhesive tape covering his mouth and a large shackle around his neck that is chained to the wall. In spite of these circumstances, he still has the fortitude to mumble "Don't just stand there! Get me out of here, you web-spinning menace!" At a hotel on the west side, the Lobo Brothers converse in Spanish as a distraught Gloria Grant watches them from the other room. Eduardo wonders if they should end the war but Carlos sneers at him, asking "Is that your woman talking, Eduardo?" With the Kingpin in hiding, Eduardo doesn't know how they can do anything else but Carlos has an idea. "Even the fattest pig will flee the mud when the barnyard burns" he says ominously.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1064/5512/files/marvel-comics-web-of-spider-man-54-1195897585.jpg?v=1759441550
3de-web-of-spider-man-62
Web of Spider-Man #62

Grade: FINE
Issue Number: 62
Release Date: N/A
Writer:
Artist:

Spidey receives a very warm welcome after rescuing a cat from a sewer for its young owner. A woman shows up from the state saying that Harry is in violation of a law that prohibits him from turning commercial property into residential. As she's in the apartment, Molten Man buzzes the flat. At the Osborn Chemical Plant, Molten Man is leaving after his shift. A car pulls up and he is told to get inside. Tombstone is there and blackmails MM into stealing a shipment from the factory for him and Hammerhead. As MM gets back out of the car, there's a Green Goblin silhouette in the sky. Pete and Robbie argue some more, then go their separate ways. Robbie is cornered by someone he was once in prison with who offers to take care of Tombstone - for a price. Spidey swings back towards his apartment where Molten Man is waiting on the roof for him. MM says this is where he came across Spidey last so he came back looking for him. He tells Spider-Man all about Tombstone's threat. Back in the flat, MJ tells Pete that she saw the Goblin costume in Harry's. They confront Liz, who accuses MJ of lying. The costume has gone from where Mary Jane saw it the night before. At the factory that evening, Tombstone and his goons show up. Spidey is waiting for them. Robbie Robertson is there and watching from a distance - apparently the guy from earlier told him this is where he'd find Tombstone. The Green Goblin (presumably Harry) shows up and tosses a few pumpkin bombs at Tombstone's men. Tombstone has sneaked into the factory to steal what he came for and Robbie follows him.
