With the ordinary pressures and awkwardness proms exhibit, this prom should get a bit more exciting when Sandman crashes the party!It's morning in America, and for Peter Parker and his peers, that means it's time for school. There are a few exceptions. Betty Brant has to go to work, and Sandman, well, he was still a bad guy back then, so we can only imagine. But most of Peter's acquaintances and tormentors are piling through the corridors of Midtown High, hassling Pete and discussing the upcoming prom. Liz Allan, however, tired of people considering her the future "Mrs. Flash Thompson," just wants to study with Peter, but a football thrown from the jealous Flash Thompson interrupts their conversation. Peter, taking great pains to conceal his secret identity (great responsibility, and all that) takes it smack in the head.Schoolwork isn't going too well for Peter, either. After all, he's busting his tail trying to scoring a grant to E.S.U. and guys like his classmate Blake can just sit back and let their rich fathers hire a first year engineer to do their experiments for them. Blake upsets him so much that he later mouths off to Betty Brant and gets promptly left at the curb. And then there's the prom. As Peter puts it, "I'd rather crawl three miles through broken glass than spend a hundred plus dollars to watch the jerks who made fun of me for four years dance, drink, and be merry." Testy, testy. But mostly, Peter's tired of having to live up to his overdeveloped sense of responsibility while getting the shaft all the time. Coming back to school the next day and finding Blake showing off the virtual reality (grrrrr) machine he "built" and hearing the teacher practically promise him the economic grant doesn't help much. But the two buckets of water in his locker were the last straw, and he storms out of school in a rage."I bust my hump every day, no questions asked, just to be blown away by a cheesy weasel like Blake and humiliated by a bunch of morons?!?" Still carrying the chemicals he had planned to use in his grant experiment, Spider-Man is swinging over New York where he runs into the Sandman. It seems Sandy's trying to move up in the world and has taken a job as a mercenary for the "Sang du Mort Brotherhood," who apparently just wanted him to smash up a city block. It's obvious that Spidey's heart isn't into his work, leading the NYPD to suspect collusion. Not wanting to waste the effort, Spider-Man throws the chemicals into the Sandman's face, gumming up his works and leaving him easy pickings. Swinging away, Spidey vows that he's working "for one person... himself!"The next day at school it's obvious that Peter's a different position. He's blowing off his lab appointment, flirting a little, and even accepts an offer to take Liz Allan to the prom (this time intercepting the football thrown his way.) All's well, right? Except those chemicals Spidey dumped on Sandman are doing some really nasty stuff to his bodily composition. Senior prom is usually a pleasurable experience, except where Peter Parker is concerned! A mutated Sandman is rampaging through the frightened city crying out for the wall-crawler, but Spidey can't respond because Peter is too busy with his showdown with high school nemesis Flash Thompson! And if Peter even gets to the prom you won't believe who he picks for his date! Peter's sudden change in attitude is having a decided effect on the Spiderverse. Flash Thompson, predictably, is more than a little upset. Liz is practically picking out china patterns. And the Sandman, who's definitely seen better days, manages to break out of his holding cell. As for Peter, he's actually skipping class, using his time to meet Betty Brant at the Bugle for an impromptu picnic at the park. But Peter makes the mistake of mentioning he's reconsidered attending the senior prom, leading Betty to believe he's asking her. Oops.The revelation that he's now asked two girls to the prom is weighing heavily on Peter's mind, causing him to zone through an independent study session for his grant application. Calling it a day, he runs right into Flash Thompson who threatens him with bodily injury if he doesn't uninvite Liz to the prom. But Peter's tired of laying down and taking it, and he tells Flash where to get off. Taken aback, Flash challenges him to a bridgewalk on prom night, winner takes Liz. Peter readily agrees. One problem: "what's a bridgewalk?" It turns out to be a walk along an unprotected section of a railroad bridge. Kids have died attempting it before. And Peter's starting to wonder if his new life is worth it.Back home, Aunt May keeps trying to get Peter to open up about his problems, but he blows her off upon seeing a news report that Sandman has escaped and is trying to find him. He runs off, leaving in Aunt May's head the idea that he would like to go to the prom with her friend Anna Watson's niece, Mary Jane. Spidey easily finds Sandman near the E.S.U. campus and is stunned by his appearance. ("You look like the Jersey shore after a midsummer picnic.") The chemicals Spider-Man dumped on him last issue took control of his body, and he's getting worse by the minute. While Liz and Betty both dream about their upcoming prom date Spider-Man is forced to tell a ticked-off Sandman that he doesn't know how to cure him. Sandman completely loses it and tries to kill Spidey, who saves himself by activating the building's fire extinguisher system (thereby dumping more chemicals on the already-messed up Sandy).Rushing back to Midtown High to figure out an antidote to his experiment, Peter discovers that Flash trashed his equipment and stole his notes. His demands: bridgewalk or else! Peter again accepts, unwilling to flush any possibility of that grant, but the final blow comes upon returning home when he hears Aunt May has set him up with Mary Jane Watson: prom date #3! "Kill me now...\
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1064/5512/files/marvel-comics-webspinners-tales-of-spider-man-8-vf-nm-1209296566.jpg?v=1764373068
ohf-webspinners-tales-of-spider-man-11
Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man #11 [VF/NM]

Grade: VF/NM

Note: STOCK IMAGE
Issue Number: 11
Release Date: 1999-11-30
Writer:
Artist:

Continuing the three-part thriller set in modern continuity, and constructed by the INHUMANS' Paul Jenkins! Peter Parker follows a trail that leads him to a kidnapped Mary Jane and a final confrontation with the revitalized Chameleon! And the climax may leave none of the participants the same! Chameleon has Mary Jane captive, and opens the issue by telling Spidey where to meet him. Where else: the Brooklyn Bridge. Spider-Man arrives in short order, unable to keep the memories from flooding into him, and finds Mr. Smerdyakov with a gun to his wife's head. He taunts Spidey with Gwen's memory (where did he learn about that?) "It doesn't seem fair that you could love someone so much, and then lose her. . . . I feel there'd be a sort of majestic irony if it were to happen again." Peter begins to rage, but meekly removes his mask at Chameleon's order. And then lets himself calm down while Chameleon reveals how he escaped death. With that calm he realizes the truth: Mary Jane was never there. The Chameleon lets the illusion fade into mist, revealing only a masked man with a gun to his own head.Peter demands to know what is going on and Chameleon tells him about his recent life. It seems he joined a circus, trying to lose himself in the persona of a clown named Eugene. Unfortunately he couldn't escape his former life, and eventually "killed" him. Eugene just wasn't real, whereas Peter, according to Chameleon, has nothing but reality. ("God, even your tragedies have substance.") Peter offers to let him walk away and start a new life from scratch, but Chameleon says it's not that easy. "I just needed . . . to tell you something . . . I love you, Peter."The shock of the moment quickly fades as Peter starts laughing in the man's face. The Chameleon realizes how his statement could have been misinterpreted, beginning to laugh along with him. "What do you do for an encore?" Peter asks. In response the Chameleon leans backward and lets himself fall from the bridge. Peter is too shocked by the sudden turn of events to react in time, and his strand of webbing is too late to snag Dmitri Smerdyakov. We'll relive the tragic and triumphant moments in the wall-crawler's career from the death of Uncle Ben to Spider-Man's ultimate victory over the Green Goblin. Will Peter realize it's better to have loved and lost rather than never to have loved at all? Or will he chuck it all and retire to a quiet life of desperation? Whatever happens, we bet that this modern day tale will leave a lasting impression on anyone who reads it! Their efforts for Marvel Knights made everybody go "whoa!"--now Jenkins and Jones do the web-spinner proud! As he walks off the bridge, rain starting to fall, Peter Parker can only come to one conclusion: the Chameleon's death was his fault. The man was alone, lost, trying to find someone who he could turn to, and Peter just laughed in his face. Just more guilt for a man burdened by too much already. He returns home, brushes off Aunt May, and collapses into a nightmare.Within the dream, the traumas of his life unfold around him. He sees Captain Stacy die again, Harry Osborn, Kraven the mad Hunter, the baby, Ben Reilly, and all because of him. Then the death of Gwen Stacy, plummeting from the bridge, neck snapping as Peter's webline catches her. "Maybe if you'd let her fall, take her chances in the water . . . maybe you killed her." But the most pivotal is yet to come: the death of Uncle Ben. No matter how much he can possibly rationalize the others' deaths, (and let's be honest, the assorted supervillains deserve to shoulder the lion's share of blame) "he died because you were too selfish and lazy to prevent it. It was your fault, Pete. And as soon as you accept it, that's when you'll be free of it." Re-energized in the dream, Peter finds himself attacking several of his enemies, laughing all the way. Adrian Toomes blacks out part of New York City to pull off his most audacious plan ever! And when Spider-Man gets on his tail, you'll see airborne acrobatics the likes of which have never before been experienced! It's a fight to the finish set in the Vulture's domain, and it's the Vulture at his most vicious! The Vulture's first stop on his little shopping spree is the penthouse apartment of a wealthy British couple. Spooked by the blackout and trying to protect his terrified wife, her husband manages to fire one bullet through his living room window before coming face to face with Adrian Toomes and collapsing with severe chest pain. His wife agrees to give the Vulture what he came for - "the 'Heavens of Aphrodite', eighty diamonds set in ropes of gold" - to appease him, and he flies off into the night in search of his next bauble.While this is happening, Spider-Man is on the other side of town taking care of your typical carjacking, thumping two of the bad guys and trapping the other two in the stolen car with a considerable amount of web fluid. He just finishes by the time the police arrive. Instead of pulling the standard "Spider-Man is just as bad as the crooks, we must arrest him!" line, the cops actually treat him like a human being and even offer him some donuts. Before he can break bread with New York's finest, however, a report of the blackout comes over the police scanner and Spidey swings off to investigate.By this time, the Vulture has arrived at the penthouse of Jill DeMarley and his plans have hit a snag. It seems Jill has divorced her loser husband and he has the "Sapphire Garden" necklace that Mr. Toomes wants for himself. Realizing his dilemma, the Vulture takes Ms. DeMarley's daughter Tamara hostage. He threatens to leave her on a building treated with a chemical compound that reacts to electric current, detonating it unless Jill gets the necklace from her husband. He then leaves, naturally flying right into ol' Spidey. After a brief scuffle, the Vulture soakes Spider-Man's costume and webline with his chemical, then ignites the webline. Spider-Man manages to let go before the fire reaches him, but that gives the Vulture time to fly away.Meanwhile, two people who are either police, Con Ed workers or both (it's a little unclear exactly who these people are!) have discovered the source of the blackouts and that the chemical accelerant (the Vulture's compound) has "an outrageous - I mean outrageous - infrared signature." While they contemplate getting some helicopters poking around with infrared scopes, Spider-Man catches up to the Vulture again, but has to break off to save a shopowner endangered by the looting the blackouts have caused. He saves the man, but refuses to go back and protect his store. Just as the man leaves in disgust, a helicopter arrives, guns blazing. Now, dozens of stories above a New York City shrouded in a blackout, the wall-crawler engages in a dizzying battle, where one misstep could lead to Spidey going splat! Spidey has managed to escape the police helicopter that was shooting at him, but now he's got another problem. Stopping the carjacking last issue left him precipitously low on web fluid, and he's got a whole city to cover. And nothing he can do will stretch his supply that much. So he finds another solution: catapulting himself high above the city using what little webbing he has to slingshot him into the sky (in an especially cool two-page drawing). Even this technique is no cure-all, however, since he still has to figure out where to look. The police helicopter, meanwhile, continues to circle the area, sending in a report that is overheard by the two officers that met up with Spider-Man at the carjacking last issue. Throwing caution to the wind, they head off their beat and try to find and help the webslinger.Returning to the Vulture, he has since arrived at the apartment of Mr. DeMarley (and mistress) and retrieves the sapphire necklace. Unfortunately, the police helicopter chooses this instant to fly by and the Vulture realizes he still needs a hostage, flying off without revealing the location of Tamara DeMarley but promising to leave her in a conspicuous location once he's safe. The police find him, but the Vulture is too quick and uses his razor-sharp wings to slice off a landing strut. They are saved by Spider-Man, who in the process nearly gets killed by the less-than sturdy water tower he anchored himself to. He doesn't have time to catch his breath before the Vulture attacks.Slicing through the billboard behind Spidey, the Vulture takes advantage of his surprise and cuts a serious gash into his back. Spidey manages to recover before the Vulture administers the coup de grace, but runs out of web fluid. Vulture realizes this and begins to fly off. He is intercepted by a determined Spider-Man who beat him to the top of the nearest building (on foot, nonetheless) and manages to jump on his back. He demands that Toomes turn over the girl, and the Vulture agrees to hand her over if he gets a walk. Spidey disagrees and the Vulture uses his electric glove to fry him.But remember that nasty little chemical he doused Spider-Man with last issue? The one activated by electricity? The Vulture didn't.The resulting fire shorts out the Vulture's electromagnetic flight harness and sends him into a tailspin that dumps him into the Hudson River. Spidey manages to peel off and land on a nearby building, which happens to be where the Vulture dumped little Tamara. Which is also treated with the chemical and starts to burn. Terrified, not by the fire but by Spider-Man, Tamara calms down when he lifts his mask and reveals himself to be a regular person. He saves her from the fire, carrying her down the side of the building with his mask on when he runs into the police. Fortunately, it is the two cops - probably the only two in the city - that are on his side, and they give Spider-Man a chance to put his mask back on. He leaves Tamara with them and catches a ride back to the city on a Daily Bugle truck, exhausted but content. Spidey joins forces with mercenary Silver Sable! But why is the wall-crawler involved in some international intrigue?Spider-Man's normal routine is interrupted by ten anonymous goons with a Spider-signal, a lá Batman. They don't give Spidey much difficulty, but Silver Sable calls him off before he can completely thrash them. She admits she was looking for him and merely wanted to verify his identity. They travel to the Symkarian embassy where Sable lays all of her cards on the table. It seems that the ruling monarch of the country of Belgruin (don't bother with an atlas; I'm guessing it's right next to "Symkaria") has been overthrown by rebels that are being aided by the Beetle, Rhino, Speed Demon, Hydro-Man, and Boomerang, who make up the Sinister Syndicate. She has been contracted to restore the king. Spider-Man listens patiently until Sable reveals that the king was a tyrant and the rebels are pro-democracy, at which point he tries to leave in disgust. But the king has an eleven-year-old daughter, and if Spidey "won't help for a share of the money, how [would he] feel about saving a child?"In Belgruin, all is not well for the Beetle. Sure, he and his cohorts are treated like heroes (a role that he enjoys) and they haven't run into any difficulty, but his relationship with the rest of the Syndicate is fragile in the best of times, much to the chagrin of the palace room they trash in a scuffle. More importantly, the Beetle is feeling bad about pretending to support the rebels as a ploy to steal the contents of the royal treasury. The shadowy man the Beetle is reporting to has no such concerns, however.Meanwhile, Silver Sable, Sandman, and Spidey (all decked out in his black suit) are parachuting into Belgruin under cover of darkness. Inadequate cover, as it turns out, since the draw the rebels' fire before they even manage to land. Spider-Man is separated from the other two and dons one of the soldier's outfits for cover, deciding to walk to a nearby village in order to avoid suspicion. He arrives shortly after daybreak in time to catch the parade the rebels are throwing for the Sinister Syndicate. The language barrier proves costly for Spidey, who spooks after an old woman takes notice of him and reveals his true identity. Just in time to take a beating from the Syndicate, none of whom are exhausted from walking all night and have little trouble wearing down the web-slinger to the point that the angry crowd can capture him.All of this provides a great show for the mystery man who's running the Syndicate. Silver Sable has enlisted the web-spinner's help in restoring order to the tiny nation of Belgrium... which has been thrown into chaos by the Rhino, the Beetle, Speed Demon and Doctor Octopus! But what is the shocking secret behind this explosive insurrection? Find out in this series' last issue!It seems Spider-Man just isn't well-liked anywhere. As this issue opens the local Belgruins are venting their displeasure with a hail of overripe fruit as he sits chained to the statue in the town square. But his public shaming comes to an abrupt end with the appearance of Sandman and the Silver Sable. They make no effort to free Spidey - choosing instead to focus on the mission at hand - but give him the opportunity to break free from his chains and save a little girl from being trampled by the panicked mob.Inside the palace, the rebel leader searches frantically for his "American friends" only to find them in the king's private storeroom exercising their five-finger discounts. Stunned by their betrayal, the rebel leader has no time to react before Doctor Octopus snaps his neck. Realizing that they have little time to lose, Doc Ock orders the destruction of the palace and the random murder of anyone in their way to serve as a diversion.The Sinister Syndicate spread out through the palace. Silver Sable, having already knocked out Boomerang during the riot at the beginning of the issue, runs straight into Hydro-Man and incapacitates him through the use of an electrically powered chandelier. Sandman gets the jump on the Rhino, managing to smother him into unconsciousness. And Spidey comes upon the Beetle, who is still reeling from the loss of the rebel he had called a friend. Wistfully remembering how much he liked being seen as a hero, the woolgathering Beetle runs right into Spidey's fist. He reluctantly begins to fight the wall crawler, berating him for saving a murdering tyrant. When Spidey blurts out that he's trying to save the king's daughter, the Beetle responds with: "you think the rebels he hung were childless? Grow up, Spider-Man! Sable's using you to collect a fat paycheck!" Unable to respond to that remark, Spidey notices a small explosive on a nearby support. Beetle takes the opportunity for a graceful escape, telling him that the castle is going to explode unless "you know anyone who wants to play hero."Arriving in the palace basement - and more than a little perturbed at the way Silver Sable manipulated him into coming in the first place - Spider-Man barely manages to avoid an ambush by Doc Ock . . . only to walk right into a cheap shot from the Speed Demon. Thinking quickly, Spidey manages maneuver Speedy into taking a blow meant for him. He and Octopus continue to struggle while the timer on the detonator slowly ticks down to zero. Speed Demon recovers in time to leave, but Doc Ock is too enraged to think clearly. The palace explodes and Spidey has no choice but to leave him in the collapsing building.While all this has been going on, the Beetle makes his way to the helicopter that he and his cohorts had already loaded with booty. However, he's barely begun to fly away before Silver Sable - king and child in tow - whips out some sort of bazooka and blows up the huey. Which ends up dumping most of the loot into the waiting crowd, much to the king's chagrin. And the Beetle had already flown too far away to hear the crowd praise him for it.With the crowd much richer but leaderless, with the man they had come to rescue raging about the loss of his precious money, with Doc Ock presumed dead despite his best efforts, Spider-Man has to voice the question: "you guys ever wonder why we bother?" Staring at the king's daughter, Silver Sable replies: "No. Never.\
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1064/5512/files/marvel-comics-webspinners-tales-of-spider-man-18-vf-nm-1209296558.jpg?v=1764372960
