An amoeba-like creature named Neverwas accidentally transports himself to the present where he inadvertently causes trouble; he sends Superman into the distant past when the sun was red. Neverwas, a gigantic, sentient amoeba, travels from the distant past to present day Midway City. Panic in the streets draws the attention of the Hawkman. Enamored with the city lights, Neverwas, quite innocently, begins creating chaos. The Hawkman engages Neverwas, only to be beaten into unconsciousness. The Hawkman brings the Justice League of America in on the case. Remembering it's power to open gateways through time, Neverwas projects a motel into the distant past. Superman follows, only to discover that Earth's sun was red, not yellow, in the era that Neverwas originated from. Powerless, Superman is just as trapped in the past as the motel patrons. Neverwas terrorizes a group of beachcombers. Aquaman attacks Neverwas. In response to Aquaman's attack, Neverwas splits into two monstrous single-celled creatures. Aquaman is overwhelmed by the twin creatures, and sealed inside an underwater cavern. Aquaman telepathically summons a giant squid to release him from his underwater tomb, then signals the Green Lantern. One Neverwas returns to the surface, while the second remains below the sea. Each begins to open a temporal portal, one above the United States of America, the other below, to project the entire North American continent into the distant past. The Green Arrow tries, and fails, to subdue the surface Neverwas. The surface Neverwas joins the Neverwas beneath the sea. Aquaman, the Batman, the Green Lantern, and the Hawkman confront the two horrific monstrosities. To meet the threat, Neverwas doubles itself, then doubles itself again. Multiple temporal portals open, unleashing the armies of past nations. An epic battle ensues, one that threatens to overwhelm the Justice League of America at any moment. One of the temporal portals opens in the distant past, allowing Superman to return to the present. Superman joins the Justice League of America beneath the sea, to turn the tide of battle. The Green Lantern encases the multiple monsters in a power ring generated bubble, and returns them to their proper time. The Green Lantern then brings the motel back from the distant past, to it's proper place in the present. Superman crafts a gigantic "toy", and throws it back into the distant past, to occupy Neverwas, ending the crisis.
